(d. 457)
   Bishop and Theologian.
Ibas was Bishop of Edessa from 435 to 449 and again from 451 to 457. In 433 he wrote a letter to Bishop Mari in Persia in which he took a mediating line between the doctrines of nestorius and those of cyril of alexandria. He was associated with Theodoret, who was himself a close friend of Nestorius and had translated the works of theodore of mopsuestia into Syriac. Because of his supposed heretical views, he was deposed at the ‘Robber Synod’ of Ephesus, but was reinstated at the Council of Chalcedon. A hundred years later, the Fifth Ecumenical Council condemned Ibas’s letter together with the writings of Theodoret and Theodore. Today only a Greek translation of the letter survives.
